Musings, tips and the occasional rant from the world of online dating.
It’s the eWooing Week In Review, some articles about dating online and related stories that you might find of interest from the past week. As always there were a lot of dating online articles to read but only a few that are really worth reading or checking out. So here are two dating online articles for your perusal. Enjoy!
Felons, sex offenders target of online dating legislation
I agree with the guy at the end of the article. He makes a very good point about giving the scarlet letter or in this case the orange hat for people to wear in public so we all know who they are all the time. How far is too far? Would you support this legislation? Would you be more likely to trust an online dating site that did background checks?
Article about the slowing growth of online dating sites recently. What types of features or ideas would you like to see online dating sites implement? Web Cams? Anonymous phone service? Tools to help make it easier to meet in person? What would you do to improve online dating?
Have some thoughts on the above dating online articles leave them in the comments.
Are you a geek? Looking for other geeks for fun, friendship and maybe more? Then take a look at Geek2Geek, the niche-dating site for geeks to find other geeks online.
What they say about their online dating site:
Geek 2 Geek is the safe, friendly, and easy to use site where geeks and their admirers can find each other. Whether you’re looking for romance or just friendship, this is the place to hook up. There is no appearance information on profiles (no pictures either), true geeks just don’t care about looks. Besides, our experience tells us that most people lie about their looks on other sites. Looks are not how our members form relationships.
The site doesn’t offer appearance information so what does it show? Well, I did a search for women geeks in my area of Seattle and found 20 within 50 miles of my zip code. From a brief browse of these profiles I found that many like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, iPods and playing Final Fantasy. One even said her favorite gadget was her graphing calculator. Now that is geeky.
The site is easy to search and offers free profiles. If you do sign up they have someone called the Geek Goddess that dispenses advice and help for geeks that need a tip here or there to move forward in weekly columns. Think of her as the geek version of Dear Abby. I was not able to find any information on their site about cost past the free profile. So if you are looking for others to get your geek on with then click on over to Geek2Geek.
Have you tried Geek 2 Geek? What do you think of a dating site for geeks or those with geek tendencies? What do you think of the assertion that geeks don’t care about looks?

OFT warns of online dating scams
The British Office of Fair Trading is warning people of possible scams in the online dating arena. The best tip and one that seems like common sense is to never send anyone funds or bank information of any type. If someone can’t afford to come and meet you without financial assistance from you then as Nancy Reagan used to say: “Just Say No.â€
Click on the video link at the top to watch the story about sites like TrueDater.com and others where you can post information about how truthful an online dater they are. What do you think about a photo mosaic of people to click on and learn about? The idea sounds fun and interesting but not all that useful. That is the idea behind PickMeQuick. So you pick a girl or a guy out of a big picture collage and their info page comes up. They are from who knows where and probably nowhere near you. What good is that?
You definitely need to use the search features such as country, region and age to narrow the field of who you are looking at. Then it starts to make a little more sense. Since most people only click on profiles with pictures at most dating sites, why not a site that you can’t get on without a picture being posted for people to click on to get more info on you. Wow that was a long sentence. Anyway they say:
The idea for PickMeQuick.com spawned from staring at one of those photo mosaics! You know the pictures that are made up of smaller pictures! The thought of putting lots of small pictures together makes an interesting collage and I think is a fantastic interface for picking out people you may be interested in contacting.
We’ve tried to break the mould of most dating site concepts. Simplicity is the goal here. The design of the site exposes the core right from the homepage. The aim is to deliver personal ads to users as fast as possible and in a fun and absorbing way. We believe this can offer a greater viewing potential to members and thus increase the chance of finding friends or dates!
You do need a high-speed Internet connection for this site to actually be considered fast. As it does take some time to download all those photo thumbnails. Once this is done though and you have narrowed your search criteria you certainly can get at the info pretty fast. This online dating site does seem to strike me as just another take on those hot or not sites, except without the voting. But people do love to click on other people photos to see more about them on online dating sites.
The profile information is a few paragraphs. A description, a likes and dislikes and what you are looking for along with the basic info of age, height etc. Also multiple photos can be posted besides the one that gets included in the mosaic.
Right now they are giving away free lifetime memberships to get people onto the site. As of this posting there are 4738 left. After that anyone who signs up will have to pay $3.00 a month. So if you want to put your pretty face out there for people to find amongst the many you might want to sign up at PickMeQuick.
Have you seen this site? What do you think of the concept? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
